Water

A guest steps in from the street and is handed a flat white across a marble counter — an ordinary Melbourne gesture, repeated here as a small act of welcome. Behind her the corridor already begins its work: floor-to-ceiling voile panels in soft rhythm, and beneath them a floor alive with rippling gold, as if the room were standing in shallow water lit from below.

Seen straight on, the spine of the building reveals itself as a single disciplined gesture: a long room held in perfect symmetry, the same gauze panels on both sides, light falling through them in even measure. A figure stands at its centre. The corridor isn't circulation so much as a decompression chamber — the architecture asking a guest to slow down before arriving anywhere.

Closer in, the language reveals its material truth. A hand lifts the hem of a curtain and the fabric answers — fine-woven, semi-translucent, catching light along its weave. Below, the floor's caustic pattern sharpens: not an effect applied to the space but a property of it, the inevitable result of warm light meeting sheer cloth meeting a polished surface.

At its most theatrical, the drapery leaves the ceiling track and sweeps diagonally across the room in one continuous arc — lit from within, swelling like a wave caught mid-break. Underneath, on a low timber bench, two guests sit in quiet conversation while an attendant approaches with a tray. The architecture here is unapologetically a stage set — but a generous one, built to hold a small moment of rest.

Looking straight down, the floor becomes the entire subject: two bare feet at the hem of a curtain, the light around them rippling outward in concentric rings, indistinguishable at a glance from sunlight on a pool. It is the most literal expression of the project's central idea — that the sensation of water can be manufactured entirely from light, fabric, and a reflective floor.

Further down the same corridor, a figure in pale linen is doubled in the floor's mirror finish, real and reflection meeting at a single line. The symmetry is almost total — curtain above, curtain below, body above, body below — and the effect is less photographic than meditative, an architecture that asks to be looked at twice.

Inside a treatment room the language softens and contracts. A single canopy of voile gathers above the massage table rather than marching down a corridor, and the same rippling light plays across warm stone underfoot. A therapist folds linen towels in silence; a coffee cools on a shelf. The public theatre of the corridor gives way to something smaller and more private — but the material vocabulary never breaks character.

Last, a powder room — empty and unhurried. A stone vanity, a softly mirrored wall, a single sheer panel diffusing the window light, and across all of it the same shimmering caustic pattern, now playing gently over a still mirror rather than a moving figure. There is no one here. The room doesn't need anyone to make its case.
